        Money market

A wholesale market for the buying and selling of money. Money market paper is predominantly negotiable and traded just like any other product. Money market maturities extend out to one year.

Money markets are for borrowing and lending money for three years or less. The securities in a money market can be U.S.government bonds, Treasury bills and commercial paper from banks and companies.

A market in which money and other liquid assets such as bills of exchange and Treasury bills can be lent and borrowed in order to satisfy the short term (from overnight to several months) cash flow requirements of banks and other institutions. Where personal investors have large sums of money to deposit, they can also gain access to the money market via the commercial banks.
