        Stag

A slang term short-term speculator.

A person who applies for shares in a new issue with the intention of selling them soon after trading begins. The stag hopes that the price will rise high enough in early trading for him to make a quick profit. Some new issues are structured in a way to frustrate stags. For instance, the flotation of Carphone Warehouse on the London Stock Exchange in 2000 included a special provision favouring shareholders who kept their shares for three months or more.
